How is powder coating different from paint?
Paint in general is a solid pigment in a solvent solution. It is applied wet and either air-dries or is baked dried in an oven, as the paint dries the solvents evaporate releasing any VOC ( volatile organic compounds) contained in the solvent leaving a thin (less than 1mm) film of coloured pigment.
Powder coatings are finely ground plastic particles. the powder is fluidized using clean compressed air, then pumped through a gun providing a electrostatic charge bonding it to the metal part, it is then placed into a oven where each particle of powder melts into the particle around it and together flow into a uniform film ranging from 1 – 10mm thick.
